What it is for
You see all your devices on one portal, with their values, their curves and a dashboard. You can also manage them remotely and control their outputs from the site.
The portal warns you if a device stops communicating, within one hour at most for a device on a local network. This matters because an STE2 sends its emails over your site's network: if that network goes down, only a portal can tell you.
The NB-2x1Wire needs a portal and comes preset for HWg-cloud. For an STE2 or an ARES12 LTE, sending to the portal is set in the device.

When to move on
HWg-cloud suits an office, a medical practice or a small stockroom, where an email alert is enough and the risk is low. It is time to move on if someone has to be woken at night, or if you need more than 10 days of history to understand an incident or respond to an inspection.
You can transfer a device to SensDesk.com. HW group points out that alarm ranges and probe names do not carry over, so you will have to enter them again.
